How Often Should You Pressure Wash Your Sydney Driveway?

A driveway that was cleaned twelve months ago and a driveway that's never been cleaned look very different. But the right frequency for pressure washing isn't just "once a year", it depends on several factors specific to your property.

Surface Type Matters

Exposed aggregate and textured concrete trap organic material in their surface profile. Leaves, algae and dirt build up in the textured surface and are harder to remove the longer they're left. These surfaces benefit from cleaning every 12–18 months, and more frequently if overhanging trees drop debris onto the driveway.

Plain concrete is more forgiving but still develops algae growth and oil staining over time. Cleaning every 18–24 months maintains a presentable surface. However, any oil staining from a leaking vehicle should be treated as soon as possible, the longer it penetrates, the harder it is to remove.

Pavers have joints between them where weeds and moss establish themselves. Regular pressure washing removes the biological growth before it displaces the joint sand and destabilises the surface. Every 12 months is a reasonable minimum for paved driveways.

Sandstone and natural stone require lower-pressure cleaning with appropriate technique to avoid surface damage. These surfaces benefit from annual cleaning but should only be handled by a provider experienced with natural stone.

Tree Coverage Accelerates Buildup

If your driveway is shaded by trees, or under or adjacent to trees, biological growth accelerates significantly. Leaf litter, bird droppings and moisture retained in shaded areas create conditions for algae and moss that exposed driveways don't experience. For heavily shaded driveways, cleaning every 6–12 months maintains the surface and prevents the growth from becoming established.

After Winter

Sydney winters are mild but wet enough to promote algae and moss growth on outdoor surfaces. Scheduling a pressure wash in spring, after the wet season but before summer heat sets growth patterns, is a practical approach for most properties.
