Streak-Free Windows: Why DIY Rarely Works and What Professionals Do Differently
Cleaning your own windows is one of those tasks that feels straightforward until you actually do it. Spray on, wipe off. But the result is usually smears, streaks, and a finish that looks worse in certain light than before you started.
This isn't a matter of trying harder. The tools and techniques that produce a streak-free result are genuinely different from what's in a domestic cleaning kit.
Why Household Products Streak
Most supermarket glass sprays contain surfactants and sometimes alcohol or ammonia. These work well enough on lightly dirty surfaces like mirrors. On window glass that's accumulated months of pollution, organic material and water minerals, they break down the surface layer of grime but don't fully remove it, leaving a residue that shows as streaks in directional light.
The other issue is application. Spraying directly onto glass and wiping with a microfibre cloth introduces the cleaning solution unevenly. Some areas get more product, some get less. As the product dries at different rates across the glass, it leaves lines.
What Professional Window Cleaning Uses Instead
Professional window cleaning uses a two-tool system: a T-bar applicator with a sleeve that applies a consistent layer of professional-grade solution across the full glass, and a rubber squeegee that removes the solution in a single controlled stroke.
The physics of a squeegee are different from a cloth. It removes liquid from the surface completely rather than redistributing it. Done correctly, there's no residue and no streaks, because there's nothing left on the glass.
Professional solutions are also formulated differently: surfactant concentration is higher, and they're designed to break down the specific compounds that accumulate on outdoor glass rather than general household grease.
The Height Problem
For any glass above arm's reach, the only way to clean safely and effectively is with proper extension equipment. Professional window cleaners use carbon-fibre or aluminium extension poles that allow squeegee work from ground level on most single-storey and some two-storey glass.
For higher glass, professional-grade water-fed pole systems or EWP access equipment is required. These aren't available to most homeowners, and attempting to clean second-storey glass from a ladder with a cloth is both ineffective and hazardous.
