How Sydney's Weather Affects Your Windows and When to Schedule a Clean
Sydney's climate is among the best in the world for outdoor living. It's also one of the more challenging environments for maintaining clean windows. Sea air, dust, pollen and heavy rain combine in ways that create specific patterns of soiling, and understanding them helps you schedule professional cleaning effectively.
Salt Air and Coastal Properties
Properties within two kilometres of the coast, from Manly down through Bondi to Cronulla, and around Sydney Harbour, are exposed to salt-laden air every day. Salt deposits on glass create a fine haze that worsens progressively. Unlike rain spots, salt film doesn't wash off with rain, it bonds to the glass surface and requires proper cleaning to remove.
For coastal properties, exterior window cleaning every six to eight weeks is a reasonable standard in summer, extending to eight to twelve weeks in winter when salt air movement is lower.
Summer Dust and Westerly Winds
Sydney's summer westerly winds carry significant dust loads from inland areas. Properties on the western side of buildings or with west-facing windows accumulate a fine red-brown dust film during periods of hot westerly weather. A single strong westerly day can deposit enough material to noticeably dull glass.
Scheduling a clean in early spring (before the westerlies peak) and again in early autumn (after summer dust season) covers the major accumulation periods for inland and western Sydney.
Rain and Water Spotting
Sydney's rainfall is heavy and episodic. Large summer storms don't clean windows, they leave mineral deposits from hard Sydney water and carry airborne contaminants onto the glass. After a significant rain event, windows that were recently cleaned often look worse than before.
For this reason, scheduling window cleaning immediately after a heavy rain period is not ideal. A dry period of at least a week following significant rainfall allows remaining moisture and mineral residue to stabilise before cleaning.
The Practical Schedule
For most Sydney properties, twice-yearly exterior window cleaning, spring and autumn, maintains a reasonable standard year-round. Properties near the coast, on busy roads, or adjacent to construction benefit from cleaning every three to four months.
